At first glance.
Stiff and Stilted.
Kainen stands up straight. He bows in greeting and departure. His tone of voice is overly proper. His words come as if pulled from the driest academic volume. There is a remarkable economy to all of his movement.
The man is very clearly from some combination of military or noble background, but it seems that he doesn't know anything other than stiff decorum - in or out of uniform.Socially Unseasoned.
The dragoon is still learning to relate to people outside of his tightly cloistered past life. Acquaintances are quick to find that sarcasm is utterly lost on him, and many of the most common social cues are met with a simple smile and expectant silence. Jokes, metaphors, and innuendo fly far above his head - especially those with any degree of crudeness. All of this often leads strangers to brand him a simpleton, yet his diction, literacy, and mannerisms are nothing short of erudite.
A closer look.
Preternatural physiology.
The man has exhibited a number of as-yet-unexplained physical feats. He has demonstrated explosive reflexes, outstanding maneuverability on land and in water, and a near-endless well of stamina with which to sustain such athleticisms. As a watersport hobbyist, he has been noted for remaining underwater for fifteen minutes or more at a time unaided. At rest, close observation of the man would find his chest rising at a rate which would be considered agonizingly slow for any other hyur as he draws, holds, and releases a single breath over the course of several minutes. These feats are perhaps easily enough assumed away as aetherial trickery or military stiffness, but a discerning eye or inquisitive mind may seek to learn more.(A character with extrasensory abilities such as aethersight may perceive more detail on the above. Let me know if this is the case!)Peculiar Priorities.
The knight shows no hesitation in facing even the most fearsome of foes, yet many mundane concerns are enough to set his nerves alight. He seems to possess little self-preservation instinct, yet he remains strictly law-abiding. He takes great care not to upset anyone - friend or stranger - and is wrought with guilt if he finds that anyone has been even mildly inconvenienced on his account. Most servants of the citizenry hang up their helmets at the end of a work day, but this knight upholds his duty unceasingly - sleep, leisure, and personal safety be damned.
Hooks
Commander of the Sky Vigil.
After a particularly successful campaign, Ser Kainen was appointed to a new garrison in the Empyreum district out of which he has been tasked with leading a branch of the Ishgardian military under the House of Commons. If your character has a lead on any threats to Alliance security or wishes to offer their aid toward the cause, they can easily find the Sky Vigil headquarters at the south end of Empyreum's Ward 16 Subdivision.(This is his primary function for the foreseeable future, and is an excellent hook if you would like to bring a small cast of rich player characters into your RP sphere.)
Vigilant Dragoon.
These days, the knight is most commonly found keeping a watchful eye over Ishgard from atop the city's many spires. If you are outdoors, chances are good that he has been watching you for a good while before you spot his silhouette against the sky.
Knight of Ishgard.
Kainen called Ishgard his home and served as a knight for many years - both before and after the calamity - though details are exceedingly scarce. No other knights report serving alongside him, he was not known to belong to any of the four noble houses, and he completely vanished only months prior to the end of the Dragonsong War - leaving any who did know of him to understandably conclude that his life was claimed on the battlefield. He has since made his return to Ishgard; resuming service initially as a typical Temple Knight for close to a full cycle before reclaiming his hallowed drachen mail and being assigned the role of Field Commander in the Ishgardian division of the Grand Company of Eorzea.Overall, the nature of his standing within the hierarchy of the Holy See has always been most peculiar, though his record has remained stellar ever since his return.
Blitzballer.
Kainen made his debut on the Ishgard Eyes, followed by a minors season with Idyllshire's Hard Place Heroes, then a second majors season under the re-branded Ishgard Heavensguard; the latter of which earned him the title 'Defensive Player of the Year'. A fourth season as goalie of the Eyes followed the year after, and most recently he was appointed to Captain of the re-re-branded Ishgard Sky Strikers who went on to claim the world championship. He has been in the spotlight over the last few cycles; his name and picture appearing occasionally on posters, pamphlets, trading cards, and other entertainment news sources throughout Eorzea. Anyone paying even passing attention to Blitzball could feasibly be able to spot him in a crowd.
OOC Info
About.
I'm located in the US CST timezone and based out of the Balmung server. I've been RPing very heavily in FFXIV since the release of Shadowbringers. I was a web writer professionally for several years, and have been recreationally writing for decades - though mostly nonfiction.I work mostly from home and have a very reliable schedule, so I am available almost around the clock these days.
RP info.
I'm a fan of long plots, action, and adventure RP before anything else, though I will never say no to some nice casual social content either - especially if it helps make connections between characters.
The deeper details of Kainen's background and characterization may push lore boundaries for those who prefer strict adherence. Though I do make a point never to clash with established canon when I can help it, I also try to offer a unique and carefully-reasoned supplement which plays with the game's soft magic and the empty 'what if' spaces of existing canon in creative ways. Above all, I strive to remain within the realm of plausibility. In day-to-day RP none of the odder details will ever come up, but they certainly will for anything in-depth.
I do not like to offer IC information in an OOC way, such as through prompts or general OOC chatter. "IC information", in this context, includes things such as my character's: history, thoughts on a subject, intentions, reasoning, or otherwise anything that the character(s) in present company would not know themselves. I vastly prefer to discuss or explore these things IC, and even then deeper details will not be readily forthcoming.
I am comfortable with most types of mature subject matter. That being said, Kainen and any content I write for him remains closely in line with FFXIVs tone. I do not believe anyone would need to worry about touchy subject matter with this character, but if you would like to delve into such things on the other hand, I'm open to hear your ideas.
I strongly prefer to RP in-game!
